Nick Jonas of the Jonas Brothers

Nick Jonas was diagnosed at age 12 with type 1 diabetes. He uses an OmniPod by Insulet. Nick appreciates that he has a  platform to be able to share his story. " I have a passion to be able to share with young people my age and be a
positive light in a situation that might not be that positive. I've heard stories about kids who were in depression because after they got diagnosed they were just so upset about what was going on".

Nick( in the middle of the photo if you are over 12 years of age and didn't know)says that diabetes "is a huge part of my life and I can't just forget about it, obviously. I have to keep taking care of it and managing it, and learning more things
about it. Hopefully one day they'll come up with some type of cure, and I hope I'll be one of the first to know about it".

Alyssa, Gianna's cousin, attended a Jonas Brothers' concert at the Sleep Train Pavilion in
Concord California. She told us that Nick not only talks to the crowd about his Type 1
diabetes but sings a song dedicated to it and shows his insulin pump. Alyssa said that Nick's
pump is different from Giannas'.

Jay Cutler, when the starting quarterback of the Denver Broncos, was diagnosed with Type 1 at the end of the 2007 NFL season at the age of 25. The 6 ft 3 in Cutler began dropping weight in October of 2007. He
ultimately lost 32 pounds by the time he was diagnosed. Routine blood tests required of players in the National Football League revealed that his glucose levels were about five times higher than normal.

Cutler has been outfitted with an insulin pump and has radically altered his diet from the days when he ate "anything and everything". Now he's working with doctors to make sure he can play to his potential on
game days without putting himself at risk. He'll wear his pump in practices and warm ups to keep his glucose levels normal. Then he'll take the pump off for the games, closely monitoring his glucose levels and
drinking Gatorade if his BGs start dropping.

Let's wish him continued success in the future in professional football, but more importantly, in his management of diabetes.

Two Sport Star with Type 1

Gianna had a very successful season playing baseball for the Yankees of
the Delta Baseball League.

She also played soccer for the Spy Girls of the Delta Soccer League in
Antioch, California.   Gianna's Type 1 diabetes does not stand in the way
of her athletic abilities or her enjoyment in playing with her teammates.

By the way, in Gianna's spare time(pun intended) she likes to bowl and
her average is 90.

Gianna was the Walk Ambassador for the American Diabetes Association 2003 walk in Alameda California. Pictured
here with Raiders great Jack Tatum and the Raiderettes.

Delta Youth Soccer League Under 8 Girls
The Spygirls coached by Juan Ledezma won the 2008 Delta Invitational Tournament by going undefeated.
